A better justice system? I THINK SO

When you commit a felony, and you’re fined, that is a punishment. However, say you commit a driving offence or something, and incur a $200 fine.

Oh no!

Now, say someone else commits a similar driving offence (or something) and is also fined $200. But, unbeknownst to you, this someone else happens to be insanely rich and owns a fucking private jet.

$200? To them that’s nothing.

Have they been punished for their offence? Fuck no.

What I’m trying to say is that fines in their current form are not a perfect method of punishment for offenders, because anyone who can easily afford to pay is obviously not learning their frigging lesson.

MY PROPOSAL!!:

Rather than set fines for particular offences, I think that fines should be based on the total assets of the offender at the time they incurred the fine.

For example, you’re the first guy (see how I’m not being sexist and saying women are likely to fuck up when driving? If I’d said parking offence it would have to be a chick though, they kind of suck at that. It’s because I’m such a great guy) and you’ve just been fined.

We’ll assume your total assets at the time, including your house etc. is $500,000. Maybe generous, maybe not. I don’t know and I don’t care. It’s just a hypothetical example guys.

We’ll also assume that you, the guy, are being fined $200. Apparently, your offence is worth 1/2500th of your total assets.

Now we’ll do the same with rich guy. We’ll say his assets amount to $10,000,000. HE DIDN’T HAVE HIS JET AT THE TIME OKAY? Anyway, he also gets fined 1/2500th of his total assets.

That’s $4000.

Yeah rich guy, feeling the fucking sting on your pocket now huh? MAYBE YOU’LL BE SMARTER NEXT TIME.

My proposition boils down to a fine ratio, rather than a set fine for everyone. This means that, while fines can be radically different for two different people, they are actually receiving similar punishment based on their situation.

Is this system fair? YES. YES IT IS.

Is this system a good idea? YES. YES IT IS.

Why isn’t this system already in place? YES. YES IT IS.

I MEAN I DON’T KNOW. STOP CONFUSING ME WITH ALL THESE QUESTIONS, RHETORICAL MAN. MAYBE I’LL USE MY JUSTICE SKILLS TO FINE YOU FOR BEING A MASSIVE JERK.
