Origin: Spirits of the Past Review

May 12, 2009

After months of not bothering with this anime film, which I borrowed, I finally watched it today.

OMFG I LOVE THIS MOVIE

It was so very pretty. The animation includes lots of CGI and it works really well. Often in anime like this you feel as if the CGI stands out from everything else way too much, but in Origin the robots and scenery and characters all fit together in a very appealing way. IT WAS PRETTY.

Story-wise, I’ve heard comparisons to Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (which is one of my favourites), but I found that the similarities didn’t really lessen my experience of either film. They were unique enough to create a different experience for the audience. The story is about a future where civilisation has fallen and mankind struggles to survive against ‘THE FOREST’. One village, built upon the ruins of a city, tries to find a balance to live in harmony with the forest. One kid accidentally stumbles across a cryogenic pod thing and wakes up a girl from the past, and she is shocked about the state of the world.

Then everyone wants the girl for various reasons.

Oh, also there’s a nation that lives in the desert who want to fight against the forest and has GIANT ROBOTS. And machine guns. And fucking awesome helmets.

OH AND THERE’S A SUPER-SAIYAN.

AND DRAGONS. MADE OF BRANCHES.

AND DRUIDS (who have awesome designs, totally gonna steal that idea).

So yeah, if you get the chance to see this movie, give it a shot. I’m glad I finally did.
